Hello everyone, this is Kyle Dohring, President of Ctrl-A in Fall 2009.
This term excited me. Our membership grew due to the usual fall rush and a concerted effort on Clubs Days, and we reclaimed our Saturday shows and the concession stand.
We had four two-day showings this term, which used a mix of continuing series (Comic Party, Toward the Terra, Hajime no Ippo, and Trigun), movies, and sampler format showings. Activities during these shows were less frequent this term, due possibly to a more communal membership this term than I have noticed in previous ones; our big activity was our yearly Halloween cosplay contest, which included Martin, who entered as a girl we now call Martina.
We had weekly Monday meetings, which alternated between business and games (though games were favoured more, as there wasn’t much business to discuss this term), which were always followed up by trips to Mel’s Diner. Two of us attempted the Godfather this term, neither of us succeeded. Boo! David, our activities coordinator, and I provided most of the different games played during these meetings, including David’s survival game and my AnĂ©mon battle game. For the most part, these meetings went off without a hitch.
Development on a Visual Novel by some of our members started this term. They held meetings every Tuesday, during which they created art, story, and I presume code. I don’t believe they have an anticipated release date yet.
This term was the last term in which I hosted my official office hours (five terms total, hurray!). These were fairly successful; we mixed watching Anime with playing assorted card or board games. SLC 2109 proved to be a very useful room for office hour purposes.
This term also saw the induction of Friday game nights. On off-show Fridays, we all gathered to a room hidden within HH and played games, be they video, board, card, or role playing. This constant diversion was frequented by a good number of members, and attended by those with some time to kill and an interest in casual gaming. We plan on getting a bigger room next term.
Other notable activities included two sushi lunches, karaoke, and a Macross marathon. After the shows, we often went somewhere to play Children’s Card Games and other video games.
Thank you to all our volunteers who helped with setup and takedown, Jeremy, who planned and ran the Macross marathon single-handedly, the newbies who decided to join the exec (Rex, David, and Tory), the exec as a whole, and all the members who always make Ctrl-A fun to lead.
