CTRL-A SURVEY FALL 2007 LONG ANSWERS

Why didn’t you attend the events?

Didn’t know about them

·         on co-op term in Toronto

·         Not enough lead time of announcements to show schedule confirmation.

·         guess i didnt notice the email if one was sent. wasnt clear that it was the last friday of every month from the posters i saw

Too busy

·         Fridays aren't good for students going home for the weekends

·         Thur night: Fri morning usually Calculus assignment due

·         One weekday show conflicted with more important activities

·         Always ended up having work on those days =[

·         Night classes

·         Co-op this term

·         night classes, assignments

·         1A engineering... death via work load

Not Interested

·         After seeing the same shows over and over, you just can't take it anymore.

·         Some shows do not start with episode 1 (or 0), so hard to understand anything in the middle

·         Wasn't interested in Anime Name That Tune outside of a CTRL-A show

Other

·         no ride to get home

·         membership (I'm a first year and I'm a little confused with membership: Is there a fee? Was I supposed to sign up at one point or can I just randomly show up for the shows?)

·         I am on a coop term outside of Waterloo

·         Not there

·         Out of province, I'd need some sort of teleportation device to get there and back in time for work

What did you think of the anime this term?

·        Funtastic

·        Suzumiya is the best ... joined the club because of this anime ... although I had the DVDs already.

·        I thought they were all pretty cool. Seeing as how I just recently got into anime, it was a good exposure to them.

·        good selection to watch

·

·        Good variety? Enjoyed most shows, with noted exception to Tales of Phantasia, which ironically is one fo the few shows we finished (good riddance)

·        Very good, but not so sure about Mushi-shi.  However, I needed a dinner break anyway.  :p  Also, Haruhi is awesome.

·        Generally fairly good, I generally enjoyed them.  The movies didn't always catch my attention, though I didn't necessarily feel compelled to stay for those.

·        Although I never showed up for any of the shows, from the list I think theres a good variety and you don't show anything too popular that everyones most likely seen.

·        Some were interesting, others were too random or boring...

·        Very impressive. The ones I like are:  Fate/Stay Night  The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi   Mushishi  For the other shows I have not really heard of or seen before

·        I don't think I can say much about the anime shown other than that anime was shown.

·        it was good I enjoyed watching what was showed. I would like to see more of Mushishi Tales of Phantasia Kamichu Fate/Stay Night The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya but if you want to show some new stuff that is ok too.

·        Seemed nice. I wasn't the biggest fan of Tales of Phantasia until I realized we were supposed to laugh at it. Fate/Stay Night isn't gripping me. Mushi-shi is a Kino-esque break from the other high-energy series, though there's nothing wrong with Haruhi and Chevalier. Also, Kamichu rocks.

·        haruhi!!!

·        A few nice animes on the list. SHnY, Higurashi, and no idea

·        Mostly interesting, but too few eps of each series at the Friday shows (which are the shows that I can most often attend). Liked Plantes, too bad I couldn't make it to the beginning of Space Night, so missed a lot of eps

·        Mushishi - good Tales of Phantasia - mediocre Le Chevalier D'Eon - no strong opinion either way Kamichu - good Fate/Stay Night - good The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - great! Beast Wars - good Excel Saga - great Kashi Mashi - WHY did you show this!? Melody of Oblivion - good Slayers - good Cromartie High - good Black Lagoon - great Read Or Die! - great Rozen Maiden - good (much better than I expected) Puni Puni Poemy - great

·        Of the Friday shows my top favorites are Kamichu, Harui Suzumiya, Chevalier D'eon and Mushishi. Tales of Phantasia didn't impress me that much. I could take it or leave it, although unlike something like Eva I didn't hate it. As for the space shows, I adore Nadesico and PlanetES. You can't go wrong with them. I know some people hate Crest/Banner of the Stars, but I'm not one of them so I'd keep watching them. No complaints about the Thrusday night shows, as Matt keeps picking the shows I already like and/or want to see. As for Saturday yester-term...Excel and Kashi Mashi rule. I'd love to see more Rozen Maiden. Cromartie just plain kicks ass. I'd never seen Lodoss before and it seemed rather predictable. Can't say I loved it and it was all typical fantasy stuff, but I have to remember it is an older one. I'd like to see more of Slayers. Melody of Oblivion had a rather ordinary and unimpressive beggining, but I've started to enjoy it now. Black Lagoon has the most bizzare opening song ever, but the show is fun to watch.

·        Mushishi: Beautiful and unique. Phantasia: Rather pointless and full of plotholes D'Eon: Historical zombie thriller about a transgendered person? What more could you ask for? Kamichu: Cute and nice to see Shinto religion. Fate/Stay Night: A lot like X/1999; moves a little slowly. Haruhi: Yay!

·        They were good.  I didn't want tomiss any of them, but I still did and it made me sad.

·        A nice selection.

Do you know of any sources for the above-mentioned anime?

·        I do have a friend who may be willing to lend anime..she has a couple of series and some movies: The FMA series & Movie, Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery(wrong name?) and others I can't remember..a few movies from the maker of Howl

·        No... But I'm sure someone must have a some of the ones listed or a video rental should have them.

·        I have some anime that the club could borrow, but I suspect Karl has most of what the lcub needs.

·        Kamichu

·        Kamichu: Karl Chevalier, Mushi-shi, Death Note, Welcome to the NHK: zip.ca (I checked)

Where did you see CTRL-A posters?

·        Everywhere, including my room.

·        SLC, AL, DWE (mostly on campus)

·        MC, since all my classes in MC. Like Yuki Nagato the most in the posters.

·        I saw CTRL-A posters in the engineering buildings and the SLC mostly.

·        engineering!

·        DWE, CPH, E2, DC

·        SLC, Math, Engineering, Arts

·        I'm not on campus much so I don't tend to see the posters.

·        On campus: SLC, RCH, Math building, rock garden area...

·        Yes, SLC and sometimes MC/RCH...

·        Physics  Chemistry  Math

·        B2, Chemistry, Math, DC, ALH

·        Fate/Stay Night

·        in science in engineering in math and the slc

·        Arts, SLC

·        slc, engineering

·        SLC, MC, AL

·        B2

·        yes, FEDs boards.

How else should we advertise?

·        Telephone poles, Imprint

·        No idea

·        Maybe telephone poles...but otherwise, I think the club's already doing a good job of advertising. Another alternative is to create a GIANT poster and stick it somewhere where everyone will see it.

·        We are already advertizing is lots of places but as it has already been suggested we could also do side walk chalk in the summer . Mabey do steps in the winter as the matenace people keep them clean.

·        campus papers, including engineering and math.

·        More posters in areas people would most likely look? I can't think of anything else that would work...

·        Imprint, or having mini showings in a more open area in the first few weeks...(Like SLC?)

·        Let the memebers of the club invite their friends to the shows.  Set up a booth in SLC. Imprint.

·        Beyond the mailing list. More word of mouth advertising is necessary, such as advertising in the SLC with a booth, or cosplay. Advertising is great idea, but I don't thinkthe club really does much for member retention.

·        The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

·        websites

·        Random posters in the MC stairwell/doors, Feds.ca calendar? (dunno how many people read that..)

·        Imprint The board outside SLC

What do you think of the activities held this term?

·        Fun

·        Cosplay Contest so good, especially good to see Tsukasa (Lucky Star). Art Contest not many people participated I feel. Hare Hare Yukai dance good, but can't find the place where people practised.

·        I liked Anime Name that Tune, but wish there was more people there though. I mean, it's not much of a competition if only a few people show up. As for the other activities, I liked judging them since I wouldn't do them simply because of my personality, not because they're not fun.

·        Hare Hare Yukai dance was great!

·        Too sparse.

·        The name that tune was fun and the lazer quest was an interesting experience.

·        Super-fun.  No, I will not capitalize fun.  The Activities director is doing a very good job and has very good ideas for fun activities between and during shows.

·        The cosplay contest seemed to have good participation.  And while I'm unable to make it to the Laser Quest night, I'm sure it'll be lots of fun :)  (If it goes well, might be something to do again in the future.)

·        Good-fun...really wish I could have been apart of them but no...seems like a good amount of activites.

·        They were good ideas except I could barely attend then since I was never around or had something of more importance to attend.

·        I was not there this term but the activities sounded very interesting, especially the dancing part from Haruhi. Good.

·        Hare Hare Yukai was fun; I didn't attend any other events.

·        Very Fun. I especially liked the participation level of the Cosplay Contest, Hare Hare Yukai, and Laser Quest.

·        It was alright, about the same activities as last term.

·        Art contests are usually win, especially open-ended ones. Laser Quest has Lasers, and a Quest, 'nuff said. Dressing up is fun, but only if others do it too so you don't feel like a dork. Or at least so you can all feel like dorks together.

·        It was fun, surprised at the number of people who participated in the cosplay contest and the dance sessions. Should have more of these changes to socialize instead of just sitting and watching anime

·        More cosplay, more art contests ('cause art is all I'm good at.)

·        Fun.

·        A good turn out.    It your going to use paper balots to vote then there should also be pens or pencels available.

Future activity suggestions

·        No idea.

·        Not sure. Surprise me.

·        Trivia? Anime Name That Character (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjieIHmEcJM) ?

·        The AMV contest in the summer went well, it would be nice to do that again, same with the karaoke/talent night (perhaps even as a separate club event instead of just a dinner break thing).

·        More Luncheons, possible gaming party (Tales of Symphonia), Anime bingo was a good idea

·        Name that tune.  Cosplay.  Anime knowledge contest. (ask questions from different animes!)

·        More social activities like Hare Hare Yukai; or more events that focus on the fans/fandom instead of anime.

·        Laser Quest again? More Hare Hare Yukai. ANNT during a show (good ol' captive audience).

·        anime north!!!!

·        Rock Band/Guitar Hero rock out sessions at breaks in shows. Use frets on Fire and some J-pop for an anime slant.

·        Laser Quest! Challenge Watsfic again, or maybe another club like Konja; Anime Talent Combat from Summer sounds like fun (I wasn't around during the summer though), or just a general karaoke contest/show; Arts and crafts night; Anime trivia; Name that Anime; Name that quote. Don't always have to be competitions with prizes attached, but just have a fun activity to see how much about anime you know or don't know.

·        Watcon. more cosplay, karaoke

·        Move away from scheduled showings and more towards regular watching.

·        I liked the format of previous terms simply because I could not make it to the weeknight shows very often. However, the variety of anime that was shown at the weeknight shows were interesting - it would be good to include more episodes during the big shows.

·        I prefered the four Friday/Saturday shows of previous terms, though that's probably largely due to the fact that having weeknight shows doesn't fit in to my schedule very well.

·        I would still like the old format, the four shows per term format on friday and saturday. It will be better if there are like 5 or 6 shows per term on Friday and Saturday plus the weekday shows.

·        I would suggest that we switch to an exec-run weeknight show schedule. Each executive would run a show every week, or once every two weeks, and would show whatever schedule they want.

·        I would like to see a saturday show added. I think the weekday shows are going to eventually die out as the volunteers get burn out from having the same people doing them all the time and then where will we be? I think the number of series was nice this time if you are going to do a longer program just add more episodes.

·        Reclaim Saturdays. We don't necessarily need four of them, but we need them for movies and activities.

·        I like the previous format.  4 friday and saturday shows

·        Regarding the show format change this term, first I want to know what the reason was to have these smaller volunteer shows. I thought the original reason was to have more interaction and discussion instead of just sitting there watching anime. However, this doesn't seem to have been achieved even with the smaller shows, aside from the occasional remarks here and there. It was still sit and watch anime one after another, just on a smaller scale, with less people (and there are various reasons why less people show up to those). Now for the Friday "CTRL-A" shows, I also don't know why it was limited to just Fridays, when we barely have enough time to show all we want to show, much less time for activities. It seems too condensed, especially if a lot of people only seem to show up for the Friday shows (thus they think CTRL-A isn't doing enough activities). I would propose changing it back to the old format, or at least move the "CTRL-A" shows to Saturdays when we have more time to do activities during the dinner break, and even show a movie. As for the weeknight shows, if it's just sit and watch anime like the "big shows", I don't see any advantages of having them, other than maybe being able to hold shows more often and thus finishing a series in the term (and people can usually do that at home anyway), esp. if it's during a weekday and people are lazy to go out. Do we want to attract more people, or provide more fun for those few who show up?

·        I personally preferred the old format. I have to travel to Waterloo to make the show so I need it all in one big bunch to make it worth the drive.

·        Show more episodes and less series.

·        I prefered the old format of 4 weekend shows (Fri/Sat). But thats mainly because I can't generally make it to the other weekday evening shows.  As such I found the 3 Friday shows to be to few and far between, trying to remember what happened last time.  And in contrast the 6 Saterday shows to be almost to much, but definatly worth it.   In either case the person running the saterday shows did a wonderfull job!

How do you feel CTRL-A is doing as a club?

·        It was an anime club.

·        I think you guys did well. I liked how you incoporated more activities into the club and were tried out the new format, thus showing innovation.

·        First term in Waterloo. Very good.

·        I think that for my first time, it was well done. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot more about anime in general. Definitely coming back next term!

·        good amount of shows

·        Very good, I was sad I couldn't make it to the events.

·        Exceeds expectations... well not like i had much in the first place.

·        Fairly well, but there are still core issues that might need to be addressed that weren't addressed by the format change (see below).

·        Seemed to do ok from what I could see.  More advertising for the non-Friday shows might have been nice.

·        No comment

·        Not bad... Lots of unorganization and I would gerenally like to see more events.

·        Excellent.

·        I would say that as an anime club, CTRL-A did poorly. I don't think the membership is very engaged, the executive is dysfunctional and doesn't work together, and despite massive amounts of interest (see the beginning of the term) CTRL-A failed to meet demand at all. CTRL-A continued to fail to listen to its membership.

·        We are already advertizing is lots of places but as it has already been suggested we could also do side walk chalk in the summer .  Mabey do steps in the winter as the matenace people keep them clean.

·        Well. Could have been better. Learning experience.

·        Wasn't in the club this term.  Thinking of joining Genshiken club next term.

·        In some aspects, better. I was surprised at the number of people who showed potential interest (like at the first meeting), but also disappointed at how the numbers dropped and went back to pretty much as previous terms. I do like the additional outside-of-show activities, those should be encouraged. However, some activities, like Anime Name that Tune, should probably be incorporated into shows (provided we have time for those) because they don't take up enough time to be their own separate activity (ANtT took like 45min at the most, and then people were bored and don't know what to do).

·        We survived and grew a little but I think we can not run both formats any more it is too much.

·        I wasn't sure about the weeknight shows but I like them now, and I will attend more if you have them (and if I like what's playing.) If the critisisms of the club are that we need to loosen up more and be open to people, than I should point out that that's how Amanda ran space night. She kept an open atmosphere where eveyone was friendly, and she was open to changing things up. If she's going to run more weeknight shows--space or random crack shows--I'll definitely show up for them.

·        I miss the old Saturday shows. The volunteer shows are a great idea.

·        Pretty good, a bit better than before.

·        O.K. for the most part.  We could, of course, use more members.  But that seems to be par for the course.

How can we improve

·        Build up the content library.  Use the office more.

·        Get new good shows.

·        the prez and vice prez need to be more go getting

·        More events is a definite improvement.

·        One member approached me about the difficulty in socializing in CTRL-A, mentioning the presence of 'cliques'.  We need to work on polishing our existing social circles, specifically on accessibility and encouraging people to just try and join in on any conversation that sounds interesting.  Also need to develop a more warm and fluffy image of our members.  Basically, we need to encourage our new members to reach out to other members.  For example, promising them we won't bite (hard).

·        I might be wrong about this..I did subscribe to get emails and I've gotten a few emails saying, show tomorrow or tonight! Are these shows pre-schedualed earlier? Actually I have a feeling they are but it would be nice if I got a message a week earlier so I could make plans to come...unless you guys already do that and I just didn't pay attention, then you guys are doing great.

·        More organization... More planning and following through with the plan.

·        Keep up the good work, such as considering the survey results.

·        CTRL-A needs to be less bureaucratic and more supportive. The club has to be willing to take risks, and willing to aid people beyond sponsoring.

·        The name that tune was fun and the lazer quest was an interesting experience.

·        Keep responding to the demands of the membership. They'll either drive the club to the ground or make it soar, whichever it does at least they'll be having fun.

·        go back to the same format as previous term.  4 shows friday and saturday

·        Change the meeting format to exec and general meetings. I see one of the reasons that people lost interest is because the meetings are so boring for those not on the exec or don't care about the nitty-gritty of how the club is run. And people usually go to meetings to see what the club is all about. I brought a friend to the 2nd meeting, and we were holding elections which took forever, and she got bored and left, and didn't come back to the club. And honestly, if I wasn't an exec, I probably don't care most of what's on the current agendas, just tell me what activities you've decided on, when and where, and I'll go if I'm interested. If I have an idea, I'll suggest it to the exec, if I really care about my idea, I'd show up at an exec meeting to discuss the details, but if not, let the execs decide and tell the members the results. We wanted normal members at the meetings because they have to pass certain things by vote. However, there is usually much apathy regarding things they don't care about, or, as was the case with deciding which series to show, we had a vote and decision, but ignored that decision completely and went with a different schedule (even though personally I have no real complaints about it). So what was the point of spending all that time during the meeting asking which series the members want, and then to vote on it if we're not gonna listen and follow the decision anyway?

·        It was nice to see a bigger crowd at the Friday night shows. Whatever you did do more of it. At the end of the day though you just can't please everyone, and I don't know if there is any one option that someone won't complain about. So build on what was working, even if it is a slow process. Sorry if that was totally obvious and/or totally unhelpful.

·        I'll asume that there was an exec this year.  Because other than during events like the cosplay and the guy who ran the projector (does he count) most times they seemed to be non entities this term and I dought I could pick them out of a crowd. (Were they only there for the 3 friday shows) The check in table and the door person were equally absent.

Any final thoughts/comments

·        The only thing that I can say about the club is that it just doesn't draw enough student interest, and it's kind of lonely when only 2 or 3 of the same people always show up at some of the volunteer shows. However, I believe that this is not because CTRL-A isn't doing a good job in advertising or providing information about these events, but simply because the University of Waterloo itself does not have enough anime fans. Just sort of wanted to throw this out there because it's been on my mind for awhile, but maybe you guys can get something out of this.

·        A++++++++++++ WOULD BUY AGAIN!!!

·        I think this club needs some kind of introduction event at the beginning of each term cause its been a term already and I vaguely know anyone at this club which is pretty sad. By the way, I'm a newcomer and I find this club isn't very warming to newcomers.

·        Anime is so much fun!

·        I think that competition would really benefit CTRL-A, and that is why I am interested in seeing what will happen when the Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture begins. I think it'll give CTRL-A a run for its money.  Also, as mentioned above, I think CTRL-A needs to show more general animation, or ought to adapt its mandate so that other clubs can 'take over' the subject of animation.

·        I like the fact that we're becoming kind of an institution on campus. We should stick around for a while longer.

·        This club is pretty horrible.  I say drop the price for membership.  CTRL-A is not in a need of money for the club so why keep the membership fee so high.

·        I've already talked about show format and meeting format. To add to that, I think it's good that we're trying out different formats, even if they're not always successful or go as initially intended. But we'll never know until we try it, that's why I think we should give exec meetings a try, and who knows, maybe it'll work out for the better. Those smaller activities like Anime Name that Tune can even be incorporated into the meetings, so that the meetings won't be just "decide what's next for the club", but also an event on and of itself. It can also let members interact and socialize and get to know each other better. Since it's during dinner time, I wonder if we can have food once in a while during general meetings.  One issue that came up with general and exec meetings is the frequency, and how exec members will have meeting every single monday, but if we want to stick with the once-a-month big show format, then I don't see why we need even exec meetings ever other week, since most of what we currently cover is showX planning/recap anyway. During a month, we can have say, 1 general meeting and 2 exec meetings, or vice versa, or switch between the 2, or even have them on different days of the week or something, so that not every monday will be dedicated to the club. Aside from meeting formats, there's also the issue of just showing anime, with 5 min breaks in between every 2 series since we don't have much time. People can watch anime at home, the more current stuff, with people they know, so why would they come to a show? We have to offer something they don't have. I saw people wanting to discuss anime at Show 3 during the break, but because the next series is starting, they were shushed so other people can hear. I think we should have longer breaks, so people have a chance to get up and discuss the series they just saw with others. Sure, we can't force people to discuss things and socialize if they don't want to, esp if they're shy, but at least longer breaks will give people a chance to talk, instead of "the next series is starting, shush". I would like to see more social activities, but I realise not everyone wants to be social even if given the chance, but at least give them a chance, and who knows, you might find someone else who's as obsessed about a series as you are. Lastly, the club has money, so use it to build up a library, so that we don't have to scramble to find sources for the shows, and people who missed a few eps of a series they really like can come in and catch up. If we don't trust people to take the disk home, have an exec member show those requested eps then.
