So, I'd like to do a special anime show at some point this term or next, focusing on gems from the 80s. I'm looking for suggestions on series, especially those we have known sources for.

UPDATE:

I need to narrow this down somehow. You can vote for any number of series, and I'll tally things here. Just let me know somehow which you'd prefer, and then I'll see about getting sources/permissions.

This is the list of what has been suggested:

Gunbuster
SDF Macross
Genesis Climber Mospeada
Megazone 23
Gundam
Zeta Gundam
Char's Counterattack
Golgo13: The Professional
Angel Cop
Crystal Triangle
Dog Soldier
Crying Freeman
Goku:Midnight Eye
Baoh
Violence Jack
Wicked City
Saint Seiya
City Hunter
Hokuto no Ken
Ranma 1/2
Uruseiyatsura
Samurai Trooper AKA Rounin Warriors
Metal Jack
Touch
Dr.Slump
Captain Tsubasa
Blue Blink
Unico (the movie)
Gundam (original)
Macross (original)
Dragon Ball
TMNT (the anime)
Epic:
# very imposing or impressive; surpassing the ordinary (especially in size or scale); "an epic voyage"; "of heroic proportions"; "heroic sculpture"
# epic poem: a long narrative poem telling of a hero's deeds
# constituting or having to do with or suggestive of a literary epic; "epic tradition"

Ugh, can our forums at least be a bastion of defense against the utter rape of the English Language?

If it occurs, I will purchase Gunbuster circa 1980-something for it (and myself)
In my defense, I meant epic as in to transcend generations, something that can live on beyond the generation it was made in. These gems in my opinion, would be just that. That seems to fit the first definition you give, however, in the event I am wrong about this, I would like to be corrected.

That said, I am looking for series which were amazing in whatever made them so, and have either maintained that gem status, or have aged finely, gaining over time something that makes it stand out from the rest.
The 80's shonen animes are the best.

Saint Seiya
City Hunter
Hokuto no Ken
Ranma 1/2
Uruseiyatsura
Samurai Trooper AKA Rounin Warriors
Metal Jack
Touch
Dr.Slump
Captain Tsubasa

From Osamu Teduka series:
Blue Blink
Unico (the movie)

Oh and don't forget
Gundam (original) (last few episodes were aired in 1980)
Macross (original)

Some of the best Doraemon movies were around this period.
And they had great kids shows like most of the Fujiko Anime

The bolded ones are the must see animes. I know Hokuto no Ken is uploaded on Crunchyroll so we have no problem. We have the OAV for Samurai Trooper... i don't really like that one but i guess we can show it...Jeremy has Macross so we have no problem with that too
Oh bros, missed Golgo13.

As for the real series that we'd show, I like Fist of the North Star and City Hunter, except they're all long. The Fist of the North Star shorter movies and OVAs were not circa-80s, so that's going off the list.

Gundam 0079 is great if we watch the movie remakes; otherwise it's a waste of time.

SDF Macross is great, except it's also long and the movie is impossible to license.

So if we go by the definition of "timeless," here's my list:
Golgo13: The Professional
Angel Cop
Crystal Triangle
Dog Soldier
Crying Freeman
Goku:Midnight Eye
Baoh
Violence Jack
Wicked City

And of course, the /real/ version of Odinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn~

Edit: I just remembered Patlabor 1 was in theatres in 1989. That's probably one of the best movies for animu and mango. And since this edit actually gives a real suggestion, Wings of Honneamise and Akira are both great movies too.
Ahh the 80s, the realm of UC Gundam, none of that random AU stuff.

Gundam
Zeta Gundam
Char's Counterattack
So many to pick
We could show Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and then it would be an epic 80's anime show. Except that LoGH isn't (and probably never will be) licensed and we can't officially show it. Boo.

I can't write a long list right now, but I have discs for:

SDF Macross
Genesis Climber Mospeada
Megazone 23

...and we could probably ask Karl for Bubblegum Crisis and Project A-Ko. Not sure what else to suggest, but if we get a source for City Hunter, we should definitely show some of that. I'm figuring that this show would be for sampling, not showing large blocks, but who knows.
I'd like to marathon Bubblegum Crisis at some point, but yeah, I'd kinda like this to be a sampler show similar to the cyberpunk show Asher did.
I want to revisit this idea, can we bring it up on Monday's meeting?
How come no one mention Dragon Ball?

Dragon Ball was awesome too! (Hence I'm watching and rewatching the some eps over and over again for dragon ball kai Tongue)
