This was mentioned during the friday show, here are a list of some shows I recommend we do:

Baccano!
Ichigo Mashimaro
the rest of the Hellsing OVAs
Diebuster (moderate nudity, play late on a friday or sat)
Code Geass
Claymore
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Evangelion 1.0 you are (not) alone

Ones I remember hearing from others:
Lucky Star
Genshiken
Girl who Leapt through time
Noein (I also recommend)
Tsubasa
Diebuster, Lucky Star, and Genshiken are all great choices.

For the longest time, I was trying to watch Noein, and I just couldn't get into it. I don't even really have a reason for that, though.

I wasn't able to find it in the history, so I don't think we've shown RoD The TV yet... That might be a good choice (The simple fact that Nenene is in it should be enough <_<Wink

I can't think of any others right now...
These are the titles (and some various information) requested by the people at Show 5:

Series
Baccano! (TV) - a series of intersecting vignettes (think Sin City) covering supernatural stuff like immortal alchemists down to mafia-run speakeasies from the 1930s.
Likelihood of being shown: Okay, but not soon. No one's picked up the license over here. If there's enough interest, we'll see about finding someone to contact about bringing it through as an R2 show.

Gunbuster (1? 2?) (OAV) - a couple of short series (6 eps at 30, 27mins respectively) with mechs and girls. Gunbuster 1 is a 1988-1989 vintage series whereas Gunbuster 2 is a recent 2004-2006 sequel.
Likelihood of being shown: Not too bad. We can show them both in one term, we're a little low on mecha series at the moment, and both should be easy to find on this side of the Pacific (Geneon release). Also, there's "The GATTAI! Movie" which is sorta like the first Armitage III movie in that it's an abbreviated look at both OAVs.

Noein - to your other self (TV) - A 24 episode series with time travel, saving the universe, and possibly cool mechs/items. The boxed set was just released by Manga Entertainment in January.
Likelihood of being shown: Not too bad. It's a full-length series, so we may not want to start it in the Summer. Manga is sometimes hard to get a hold of, but if we play our cards right they may send the club the boxed set for free.

Witchblade (TV) - A 24 episode series with scantily clad women, violence, and blood. Recent, well-rated, will be completely released (6 DVDs) by FUNimation by the end of April.
Likelihood of being shown: Not too bad. Again, starting a full-length series in Summer is not something we go for (we don't like having frosh feel like they're appearing in the middle of something), but we can get over it. FUNimation is amazingly easy to get permissions from (If any Operation Anime staff are reading this, keep up the good work!), and from what I hear it's popular enough that we ought to be able to find it easily enough.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) - A 25 episode mecha/alternate future/war series where the protagonist gets the ability to put people under a geas (like a magically-enforced obligation... it makes people obey him). Rated very well, production qualities look high (CLAMP for character designs + Sunrise for production).
Likelihood of being shown: High, but not this term, since it's been licensed but not released (and there are no release dates on the website). Since it's been licensed, the Japanese company won't give us a go-ahead, and since it's not been released, we could, at best, hope for a pre-release set of screener discs from Bandai... and though it's happened before, I don't know if we can count on it happening again. Look for this one next year.

Genshiken (OAV) - A quick 3 episode continuation of Genshiken, an anime series about an anime club. I mean, how much more perfect could that premise be for CTRL-A? Dude! Plus, there's a 12-episode TV sequel to this sequel: Genshiken 2.
Likelihood of being shown: Extremely high, but not next term. Media Blasters holds the license and there's no evidence of a release date on their terribly designed website.

Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE (TV) - One of CLAMP's more recent adaptations (along with Code Geass) is this 52-episode magic/mystic series that takes Syaoran Lee and Sakura (from Card Captor Sakura) through other CLAMP Universes (from X, xxxHolic, Chobits, and possibly even Magic Knights Rayearth) to meet characters from them and search for Sakura's lost memories.
Likelihood of being shown: Not too bad. Completely released (FUNimation) I know of someone who has the discs. Rated highly, CLAMP's a crowd pleaser...

Koi Kaze (TV) - A 13-episode sad-romance about a Wedding Planner who just can't find romance for himself. Rated quite highly, popular, recent-ish (2003-ish)
Likelihood of being shown: Not too bad. Completely released (Geneon), should be easy to find. Might not be a crowd pleaser, so it may see play in one of the more specialized Shows.

Movies
5 Centimetres Per Second - A 1-hour collection of 3 semi-unrelated short films about distance and emotion. Same guy who did Voices of a Distant Star and A Place Promised in Our Early Days, I've been meaning to watch this for a while. It was just released by ADV in early March.
Likelihood of being shown: Excellent. An anticipated title with an easy-to-schedule length from a distributor that is easy to work with. The matter is just 'when' we show it, not 'whether'.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - 98 min - What the title says, this movie is about a Girl who can literally jump backwards through time to change things. The movie deals with the repercussions of changing history and what it means to her friends.
Likelihood of being shown: Excellent... if it wasn't for Bandai dithering on whether or not to have a theatrical run in 2008 prior to a DVD release. It was shown at last year's WFAC off of a 35mm print, but we don't have the technology to display that. We'll keep plying our sources, don't you worry, to get this as soon as we can.

Appleseed: Ex Machina - 105 min - A sequel to the groundbreaking 3D-CGI-anime film "Appleseed", it revisits many of the same themes of humanity and robotics (it's a Masamune Shirow work, so we coulda guessed that (he's the Ghost in the Shell guy)) and takes place in the same universe.
Likelihood of being shown: Excellent. The first movie was a crowd pleaser and this one is rated even better. It has been released by Warner Bros. (dubbing c/o ADV) so there's gonna be an interesting permissions situation (though according to the copyright board, Criterion does WB in Canada and FedS has a site license), but as an upside, it's seen a Blu-Ray release so we'll be able to show it in Hi-Def!

I am not sure where you obtained the description from, but that is barely scratching the surface of that series. Having both obtained and watched the series, I would not be in a hurry to show it. The nature of the series requires a considerably mature audience who can handle quite a controversial topic. I enjoyed it considerably when I watched it, but this series is not one I would be in a hurry to show.

I already looked up Gurren Lagann as it was suggested I show it. The first disc does not seem to have a specific release date yet.

Check!

Ichigo Mashimaro

"Cute Girls do Cute Things in Cute Ways"... sounds cute. Boxed set is out, it's distributed by Geneon, and it's only 12 episodes. Sounds like a Cute Candidate for Summer

Naz Wrote:
the rest of the Hellsing OVAs

Ah, therein lies the rub. There are 4 episodes of this (thus far? I think in total) and the 4th was only broadcast in February. That being said, the first three are out and the fourth is due sometime soon (an explicit date I cannot find), so it's possible.

Naz Wrote:
Diebuster (moderate nudity, play late on a friday or sat)

Ah, Gunbuster 2. Check!

Naz Wrote:
Code Geass

Check!

Naz Wrote:
Claymore

26-episode monster-slaying fantasy series licensed but not yet released by FUNimation. Looks nice, but we'll probably have to give it a term or two to come out.

Naz Wrote:
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

TV or movie? (checks) Oh, the movie's not out yet.
26-episode TV Series from GAINAX. First DVD's out already (Feb 26, according to ANN), and ADV usually has a fairly quick release schedule... strange, though, that they haven't announced vol 2 for April... Probably not enough of it released for us to show it in Summer. Good Fall pick, though.

Naz Wrote:
Evangelion 1.0 you are (not) alone

No North-American licensor announced, and given its high profile status I suspect that Studio Khara wouldn't be cool with letting us show it. Though, we haven't asked them for anything yet... Something for the ERO to work on.

RoD TV we have shown... I think it was 2005 that it ended in (Winter '06 doesn't have it listed, but I know it was shown semi-recently because I was the projectionist for it). That certainly doesn't preclude it from being shown, but it'll likely be up to you to convince a volunteer (or become a volunteer!) to show it at a specialized show.

Keep the suggestions going! I'll be here providing an exec's perspective on the likelihood of each candidate being selected, and possibly offering some suggestions of my own.

Remember, if you think that a series that is unlikely to be selected for the exec-run shows is still worth showing, it's up to you to start your own Volunteer Show to show it! Volunteer Shows are extremely easy to set up, but the scheduling is the time-consuming bit, so start now for next term!

But first you should suggest it, so let's keep the ideas coming!

Naz Wrote:

I thought the Hellsing OVAs were mostly recaps but there were some new stuff.

Naz Wrote:
Code Geass

I think anime is alittle overrated. I'll vote Gurren Lagann being a better anime then CG. Season 2 is airring spring 08 I think.

Naz Wrote:
Claymore

The ending sucks. I advise showing up to like episode 20 or something and stop. Kind of how Gantz was stopped.

Naz Wrote:
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Pretty decent anime.

Naz Wrote:
Genshiken

I don't know if your talking about season 1, OVA, or season 2. I thought this anime was pretty boring. If your showing OVA then you have to show season 2 also because the new girl was introduced in the OVA. Season 2 was unbelievable. There were a lot of disturbing scenes in Season 2. Don't think this anime is right for an audience like ctrl-a.

Naz Wrote:
Lucky Star

I don't think ctrl-a member will like this anime. I really enjoyed the series but it's alittle different then PPD. There are a lot of jokes and stuff related to other animes and japan related so I don't think ctrl-a member can enjoy the full potential of this anime. Eg. Tsukasa wakes up and says she is not use to getting up early because of daylight saving time but in Japan there is no daylight saving time. Because North America has DST some people will just think it's just normal dialog.

Tsubasa Chronicles

I never really like this anime even though I'm a big Sakura fan. The anime just moves too slow imo.

I've been watching many romance animes lately and my recommendations are:
True Tears
ef - a tale of memories
myself; yourself

Clannad(wouldn't really recommend this but episode 22 was amazing)

It is not there because like Kuji-un (OAV) it is being released as an extra look at Kujibiki Unbalance (TV) first disc out is end of April though.

Wait, so the Genshiken OAV is being released only as the 'special feature' on the KujiUn TV discs?! What a gyp! I don't know about anyone else, but I *really* didn't like Kujibiki the first time I saw it. Ugh.

And if that's the case, then I guess we have to wait for Media Blasters to release KujiUn in its entirety before they even get started on Genshiken 2. *sigh*

I've been watching many romance animes lately and my recommendations are:
True Tears

true tears - 13-episode series in the high-school unrequited romance genre. Popular girl's parents die which sends her to live with a family whose son is smitten with popular girl but finds himself able to do little more than paint and pine for her.
Likelihood of being shown: Okay, but not in Summer. Slower series and romances in general aren't crowd pleasers in general and this one is rated lower and is less popular than many, but it has a nice length, an attractive-sounding feel, and it's licensed by Bandai with the first disc out on May 27. I think that the best bet for this one would be a volunteer show in the fall.

Hiigari Kagami Wrote:
ef - a tale of memories

ef - a tale of memories - 12-episode series about two protagonists: one with a love triangle and one with a love that just cannot be. The first is a boy who meets a nice girl and whose childhood friend feels left out. The second is a boy who meets a girl who's always wanted to write a novel, but is incapable of storing memories for longer than 13 hours (long-term Memento syndrome).
Likelihood of being shown: Iffy. Not licensed means that we have a chance with the Japanese distributor, but since it's Geneon Japan, Geneon NA might have reserved rights for it and they may be reluctant. Attractive length for scheduling, more popular and better received than "true tears" make it a nice choice. Again, probably a volunteer show thing, and if anyone feels strongly about this one, they should get in contact with CTRL-A's External Relations Officer about seeking permissions *soon*

Hiigari Kagami Wrote:
myself; yourself

Myself; Yourself - 13-episode romance about a boy returning to his smallish hometown after a 5 year period living in Tokyo to find a shrine maiden still wearing a bracelet he can barely remember giving to her 5 years ago...
Likelihood of being shown: Hard to say. Unlicensed, so contacting the Japanese license holder and importing R2s is an option. I've never dealt with these entities before (Dogakobo, Yeti), so I couldn't even venture a guess as to that likelihood. Not as popular or well received as "ef", but not bad. Easy to schedule. Same suggestions apply as "ef"

Hiigari Kagami Wrote:
Clannad(wouldn't really recommend this but episode 22 was amazing)

Clannad - 24-episode high school romance from those who brought you Kanon and Air. A troubled youth, a delinquent, meets up with a strange girl and slowly their relationship takes his life in a new direction.
Likelihood of being shown: Iffy. No license announced, but you can bet that Key and Kyoto Animation probably are holding the property close for when ADV (the ones who picked up Air) comes a-knockin'. Still, the same ideas and suggestions from the last two apply.

On the other hand, CTRL-A actually owns many of the Air discs (including the movie), so showing it in the meantime has a much higher chance of success. The question is whether I am making a gaff by comparing Clannad to Air? Can someone comment on that?

...and what's with all these series with lowercase names? Did they wear out their Shift keys?
