Is there even such a thing? Which manga do you think as good for describing the certain attributes of a certain genre?

Ex. shojo, shonen, etc.
Or even mini genres, like sports, cooking, fashion...
Hm...I think Sailormoon and CardCaptor Sakura is a good example of Maho Shojo

And Junjo Ito's Uzumaki is a great description of the horror genre.

And Ichigo 100% or Aoi Ayoshi are good examples of harems
Fushigi Yuugi pretty much defines shoujo (it's more like a soap opera to me XD), but more so Reverse Harem. Actually pretty much any Yuu Watase manga are good examples of shoujo.

Naruto and Bleach for shonen I suppose.

for mecha, it's kinda hard, since most mecha series start out as anime and the manga are adaptations. And manga don't do very well for mecha battles XD
*ahem* You would know I'd go there...

I would think that Love Hina is pretty much the defining harem anime... (certainly is for me, considering it was my first anime, and so I judge all other harems against it in a way) (not that I watch only harems; they account for a minority of the shows I've watched, actually)

And you wonder why we call you the harem guy =P

I would say for the mystery genre, it would have to be Detective Conan...despite the fact it is not possible (as far as I know) for someone to shrink to the age of 7, it puts the ultimate 5-minute mystery to the test.

I've seen Kindaichi, Sakon the Ventriliquist, Zodiac P.I., and a couple other ones with detectives as the focal point, but Detective Conan is the most "logical."
I love the Detective Q series. I think that's a very good detective manga cause it's a lot like Sherlock Holmes
kindaichi...that series has one major flow: wherever kindaichi goes, there are murders and crimes... he's the cause of every murder incident!!!!!!!!!!!!(seriously, hes a slow detective. He sacrifices like 3 or 4 people to solve each case... but i like the series)

Haha, sounds like Conan! But he's not the cause...and there's a major thread in the series about the Men in Black.
And the fact that Kaitou Kid-sama pops up at regular intervals. >///<

There are people dying off left and right wherever they go. They need a sign that says "Murder Magnet," instead of the usual "Chick Magnet."Cool

I'll check out Detective Q! Anyone know if the CLAMP School Detectives are any good?

I HAVE the CLAMP school detectives. It's much more of a children's detective story, with mysteries like a lost pet and such. But it's very charming. I would recommend it for shojo and CLAMP lovers
