Full Version: Question about the club...

I am an undergrad. student from Waterloo. I am not fanatic about anime, and can get stubbornly picky about anime selection. While I do understand that there's no requirement for membership other than $7.00 fee... I want to make sure it's a right club for me.

What I am most interested is to develop decent skill to draw anime. I can draw relatively ok, but I am simply terrible at drawing animated people (Or any other humanoid form for that matter)

And where can I get details about accountability and time commitment? As much as I am interested in anime, academic performance should be the top priority.

Many thanks,
pekau

PS: I am very obsessed with Evangelion, and currently looking forward to 2nd Rebuild of Evangelion along with 2nd season of Gundam 00. I absolutely loath Naruto (Yes, I get shocked faces all the time)

I'll post more later on.

From my experience, money should not be one of the first things to consider when signing up with this club for a term. When you consider what $7.00 can get you these days, there is a lot the club can offer for such a price, such as:

There are normally three groups within the club who regularly run anime shows. This could change at anytime if people within the club are serious about operating their own shows, however.

Exec Shows: The shows run by the people who are in charge of the club.

WAFL Shows: Run by current club president Amanda. These happen roughly every (or is it every other?) Wednesday night. The theme is "Whatever Amanda Feels Like" and has been running for 2 terms so far.

Yester-Term: Run by some strange Kuro-chan called Adam. These are often paired up with Exec shows on Friday, but also run independent Saturday shows and marathons. Like WAFL, it has been running for 2 terms.

When activities are done, often prizes are given out to the winner, so those who are serious in becoming quite involved in participation can also benefit for their efforts.

There are often the counter-arguments to the events like "It's easy to download a show and watch it for free". Fair enough, but you still have to pay for the internet connection and you cannot download a group of people to watch the event with you and make the shows more interesting to watch. How often I find myself enjoying the shows more hearing the audience reaction along with mine as I watch it. Given how much is shown in a 3-4 month time slot, $7.00 is cheap.

I think the best thing to do in that regard is ask the membership at large. There is a wide variety of talent withing the club membership. People who excel in arts, music, computer science and engineering, business and many other things. There is a good chance you can meet people there who would be willing to provide advice and/or assistance.

As a member, it is entirely up to you when you wish to show for events and meetings. Once the membership has been purchased, club members can come and go as they please. To watch the shows or participate in major events, a club membership is required though. CTRL-A does not require it's membership to attend every event. Often the club have members who only show up for certain anime shows or for some days of the week.
In the event of a show being canceled due to exceptional circumstances (University closed, something happened to the event runner(s)), notice is given out as early as possible.

As someone who has less stake in the club than Kuro-chan, I'll just say that if you like watching Anime, CTRL-A is the club for you. Otherwise, there are other avenues you might want to explore.
As of right now, CTRL-A is a club for watching anime. There are pushes for changing that in some way or other, and I, for one, am a fan of suggesting various anime-related but not anime-watching events, like a class on how to draw anime (I personally can't draw anything more complicated than a stick figure, so I wouldn't attend such a session, but it's definitely something I'd support incorporating into club events).

If you're interested in learning to draw anime, come to a club meeting (preferably towards the beginning of your next on-campus term, or Clubs Days if it hasn't happened yet...I'm not on campus this term so I don't know) and suggest it. If enough people want to do it and we can find someone who can teach it (that's the hardest part), I'll bet the club will be more than willing to do it.

P.S. I'm also an Eva fan, and *shocked face* at your distaste for Naruto.

P.P.S. Next term, when I'm on campus, I plan to try to run a Show and a Lesson in conjunction with KonJa, where we have a Japanese lesson and then watch some anime (or maybe the reverse, and there may be food, or something...I haven't really thought it out properly yet)
You should definately at least check the club out at one event and see what you think. Beyond meeting people of similar interests, I found it was a great way to find new anime to watch that I very much enjoyed.

PS I am beyond obsessed with evangelion; for me it is more of a religion. Although I'm not watching 00, I'm pretty obsessed with Code Geass R2 and Soul Eater as far as stuff that is coming out right now.
I think it should be pointed out we are trying really hard to do more than shows, but your President is one lone soul and can only devote so much time to doing this. She has to work sometime to afford the net connection and the roof over her head.

If there's an event you have in mind, we're happy to take pitches, in fact we're asking for them Monday so that we can plan even more. The exec this term are rather enthusiastic about moving out of the anime only events and we're giving it all we've got, we just ask for your trust and cooperation in return.
