Winter 1993

We obtained official club status early in January. This recognition by the Federation of Students gave us the right to book rooms and equipment on-campus ourselves, and provided some minimal funding and access to their advertising resources.

During this term we discovered, largely by trial and error (mostly error), how to run a club and viable setups for what we were to do in the future. In particular we learned all the necessary preparations involved in the production of our 6-hour 300+ attendance shows, including the necessity of requesting permission for the legal exhibition of material in university facilities. We set our shows to be Fridays around the end of each of the first three months of each term. The first was set to be open to all comers, the second and third to have a policy of non-member admission only for first time guests. That term we did two shows in AL 116 and one in Village I. We also developed contacts with several anime companies, and did our first Group Order, organized by our new Publicity Officer, David Bennett (see executive below).

It was during this term that we did our first raffle, and started selling food at the shows. Mark Ng started his fantastic posters, and also designed our logo, which appeared on our first membership cards, sold at the second show. It was also at this point that Dennis Pejcha started his tradition of winning our raffles.

Bret and David B. began the first efforts of CTRL-A members to subtitle material that was unavailable domestically. Two titles were chosen, Totoro and Nausicaa. While the first was relatively simple (a timed script was already available), considerable work was done in creating a script worthy of Nausicaa as the two translations that had been done before were both extremely poor reading. These two efforts became feature attractions at our final show of this term. This marked the beginning of our reliance on our own members for material to show. Future sources of anime would include Mike Seid (who became our primary subtitler of unavailable anime) and Caroline Kierstead, who was also doing an excellent job as the new club Secretary.
