Winter 1991

The first term, Winter 1991

David de Jong, co-founder with Bret Hoeffler of The Club we now know and love, had seen Robotech, G-force, and several other anime series that had been brought to North American television. He knew of Japanese Animation by reputation, but had no expertise on the subject and had never developed a collection.

Mark TildenA U of W staff member named Mark Tilden gave a showing of Laputa in association with a local film society. It was an ad hoc presentation, announced with very short notice in the film society professor's classes, and on a few newsgroups. There were less than a dozen people there, including Bret and David. Despite the small scale of this showing, it was this exhibition of Laputa that later proved to be the catalyst for the creation of CTRL-A.

Questions to be answered: Who else was in attendance? Which film society?
